Making a Difference in the Construction of the Asanko Gold Mine in Ghana

November 1st, 2016

Bolloré Logistics South Africa and Ghana successfully completed Phase 1 of the construction of the Asanko gold mine, owned by the Canadian mining company, Asanko Gold.

The Asanko gold mine is located in the Asankrangwa belt in Kumasi Basin in Ghana, about 200 km from Tema port.

It is an open pit mine, including the Nkran pit, four satellite deposits (Abore, Asuadai, Dynamite Hill and Adubiaso) and a leaching plant and a carbon treatment facility. The mine is the exclusive property of Asanko Gold, with a 10% share owned by the Government of Ghana.

The production began in December 2015 and the first gold was done in January 2016, while the production reached its peak in April 2016.

The collaboration between our Mining division and the engineering company DRA SA started in 2013 and led to a 3-year development phase during which the technical feasibility studies, pricing solutions and also an optimized Logistics Execution Plan (LEP) were established and negotiated with the client.

The implementation phase was conducted both in South Africa and Ghana with all involved parties: DRA, Asanko Gold and Bolloré Logistics’ project teams. As a result, two contracts were signed.

The construction phase which was completed one month ahead of schedule and within the predefined budget, demonstrates the efficiency of the logistics solutions offered by Bolloré Logistics to Asanko Gold and DRA.

The Bolloré Logistics approach was structured around the following main areas:

    - On the ground pre-feasibility studies, conducted throughout desktop studies, road surveys, infrastructure analysis and pricing, submitted to DRA, the contracted EPCM;

    - Dedicated resources from the signing of the contract: Project Managers in South Africa and Ghana working in operational tandem; A South African based Control Tower in charge of the central coordination, main hub for goods procurement and consolidation.

    - The implementation of internal SOPs ensuring operational performance and compliance with our contractual obligations.

    - Regular weekly and monthly performance reports in agreements with customer’s requirements, followed by periodic site visits and the implementation of corrective actions to rectify any non-compliancy observed.

Approximately 30,000 FT has been handled by Bolloré Logistics throughout the mine construction thanks to its efficient project management.

We are favorably positioned to carry out the construction of Phase 2 of the project regarding the Essase deposit, and are already in charge of the Supply Chain volumes for a contract of at least 15 years.
