South Africa Wins Rising Star Awards 2017

October 16th, 2017

The Rising Star Programme in South Africa has been established for the purposes of recognizing, celebrating and connecting young talented people. The qualities that elevate Rising Stars to the top go beyond performance and technical excellence. Rising Stars are those individuals who portray the potential for great leadership, for reasons that go far beyond their technical abilities alone.

After receiving hundreds of entries and going through thousands of pages of nominations, motivations, videos and verifications, the finalists for the 5th Annual Standard Bank Rising Star Awards were announced and featured five Transport, Logistics & Security finalists. These were Sean Mcghee DHL International, Dineo Msomi CHEP, Christopher van der Merwe Bolloré Logistics, Fhatuwani Nephawe, and Kenneth Williams Transnet Freight Rail.

There were three rigorous phases of judging. The first was a nomination where the nominee gave information about the entrant, the entrant then had to write an essay about themselves and the final round was an interview with a question and answer session. The entrants were then judged based on their ability to show how they would action helping themselves and other, to be the best that they can be and therefore win the award of "The Rising Star" in the transport, logistics and security category / sector.

"We are delighted to have so many entries from across the country identifying such a broad range of corporate and public sector talent," says Laura Barker, Managing Director of BlackBark Productions, organizers of the Rising Star Programme. "It is encouraging to see these awards grow year-on-year – it means our goal of recognizing and developing talent is real."

Christopher van der Merwe - who came from humble beginnings in the logistics industry, and working various jobs before joining Bolloré Logistics - shone throughout the judging process and was announced the winner of this prestigious accreditation at a Celebratory Gala Dinner at the Sandton Hilton on July 27 2017. Chris currently works in Export Air Freight Operations at the Johannesburg operations in South Africa.

Chris added: "My current drive is to keep my head down, my feet grounded and push myself daily, making sure everything I do is to the best of my ability, setting new goals and targets and to become an integral part of the Bolloré Group in the future. It is never failure when you learn and victory is never achieved alone."
