Project Highlight: Isimba Hydropower Station Uganda

June 26th, 2019

In March 2019, President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda, inaugurated the third largest Hydro-Power Plant in the country. This large-scale infrastructure allows Uganda to expand its hydropower network by an additional 183 megawatts.

During the facility’s construction, which started in October 2013, Bolloré Logistics played a significant role in the project’s development by being the main heavy lift logistics partner appointed by the facility’s contractor.

Along the five-year construction period, Bolloré Logistics handled more than 413 TEUs and 7,847 MT of cargo which included turbines and transformer parts, building equipment and accessories. The cargo was transported from the port of Mombasa in Kenya to the project site in Kayunga, Kamuli District, and located 1,124 kilometers apart.

The largest cargo handled during the project was composed of two turbine runners each weighing 85 metric tons, measuring 3 meters in width and 3.7 meters in height. Bolloré Logistics Projects experts ensured the safe and on-time delivery of the transformer’s equipment to the client’s site by using specific dedicated equipment’s such as 20 meters extendable semi-trailers & modular trailers.

Through the completion of this landmark project, Bolloré Logistics teams proudly expressed their readiness to support Uganda’s national efforts towards expanding access to electricity in the country.
