China Takes Action for Left-behind Children in China Rural Areas

March 21st, 2019

Partnering with an NGO, Bolloré Logistics China organized a collaborative volunteer teaching project for left-behind children in China rural areas in the winter of 2018.

There are more than 60 million left-behind children in China, mostly the offspring of migrant workers forced to leave villages for cities in search of jobs. By collaborating with Stepping Stones International, an NGO which aims to improve the education and general welfare of vulnerable youth to unlock their potential, volunteer teams from Bolloré Logistics North China and Central China went on trips for left behind children in the rural areas in Anhui Province and Henan Province.

Living with their grandparents or other relatives, most of the seven-year-old children in Zhenlong Primary School (Anhui) and Zhanggou Primary School (Henan) only meet their parents during the Chinese New Year Holiday. The teaching project offered the children different learning opportunities and a new learning experience. With a pre-training by Stepping Stones International on teaching skills, Bolloré Logistics volunteer teachers taught these children English pronunciation lessons using flashcards and helped them practice spoken English through role-play games.

This trip has been an amazing experience not only for the children who were very excited to learn and gave thankful letters to the volunteers at the end of the lessons, but also for the Bolloré Logistics teams who learnt the hardships of being a teacher and were very touched by the smiles of these children and their energy. “It’s an exciting journey with warmth and love,” said Jessie ZHOU, General Manager of Operations for Bolloré Logistics Central China.

“Giving back to those in need is part of what every citizen and company should do, I am proud of the good response from our management teams when they were proposed to participate in this program,” Mr. Stephane GUESNIER, Director of Bolloré Logistics Greater China, says. “The engagement to the needy was sincere, which created amazing contacts between the teachers (us!), and the children.”

The volunteer teaching project was such a success that a third team, Bolloré Logistics South China, will have another session in March 2019!

This charitable patronage project is part of Bolloré Logistics' "Powering Sustainable Logistics" CSR program and responds in particular to the commitment "Contributing to the development of the territories of our network". It adds to the many societal initiatives carried out by the entities in favor of youth through its new sponsorship policy focused on education and training.
