Managing the Logistics Aspects of Ocean Rig Poseidon in Tanzania

April 24th, 2018

Ocean Rig, an international offshore driller, has signed a drilling contract with Statoil Tanzania AS, a world leading explorer for oil and gas with 4.5 billion barrels of oil equivalent (BOE) discovered from 2011 to 2015. In the scope of this partnership, the drilling operations are performed by the 228-meter long and 42-meter wide Ocean Rig Poseidon. The latter arrived in territorial waters of Tanzania to carry out water drilling operations on behalf of the contractor Statoil. It was imported into Tanzania under temporary basis and is due to be re-exported at the end of the drilling operations, all customs clearance procedures being entrusted to Bolloré Logistics Tanzania.

This drilling is part of the ongoing offshore exploration activity conducted by STATOIL Tanzania AS under its production sharing agreement (PSA) with Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC). In this context, Bolloré Logistics was awarded the contract by Ocean Rig to handle their importation and re-exportation requirements, marine services as well as husbandry services (ground logistics, meet and greets, travel arrangements, airport transfers, flight and accommodation booking, etc.) for Ocean Rig’s crew. These latter involved, on average, sixty people visiting the rig on a weekly basis during four weeks, approximately 240 persons in total. In terms of equipment, the total tonnage handled for the duration of the campaign is 263,000 tons.

Our teams also organized to coordinate the pickup and drop-off of all Government authorities (TCAA – civil aviation –, SUMATRA, Port Health Services, and Tanzanian Customs) once again in the scope of our Meet & Greet service offering, which included management of all immigration aspects for the visitors.

Bolloré Logistics Tanzania thus proves to have a good command on a heavy project involving several aspects. They demonstrate high flexibility and reactivity in the scope of their partnership with Ocean Rig.
