As part of the plans for a regional express train (TER) to link Dakar to Blaise Diagne International Airport (located in Diass, around 50 km from the Senegalese capital) via Diamniadio, the EIFFAGE Group – a French group specializing, among other things, in the construction of rail infrastructure – entrusted Bolloré Logistics with the shipping and delivery of two tamping machines. These machines are railworks machines used to position the tracks.
The good coordination of the Industrial Projects teams in France and Senegal ensured the timely delivery of the equipment, in best conditions. The latter was transported in a record time from EIFFAGE’s facilities in France all the way to Le Havre Port, thanks to an exceptional convoy and to cope with the client’s expectations. It was then loaded, end of December 2017, onboard a Ro-Ro terminal heading to the Port of Dakar.
Both machines, notably comprising of two 19-meters-long sections, were 3 meters wide, 4 meters tall and weighed 75 and 64 tons respectively. At arrival in Dakar, they were unloaded by the teams from the Dakar Terminal subsidiary early January 2018.
This type of cargo, with a non-centered center of gravity, required implementation of different jacking methods in ports of Le Havre and Dakar as well as on jobsite by Bolloré Logistics’ teams in order to ensure adequate handling.
Two 200-tons cranes were then used by our teams to transfer these tamping machines from the MAFI trailers at the port to the tank transporters. A special convoy, composed of a 120-ton tank transporter, a six-wheel heavy load tractor and a hydraulic trailer, was organized to deliver the machines in two days.
Delivery took place at two sites, the Dakar train station and the town of Bargny, located 30 km from Dakar. The support from the EIFFAGE Rails teams enabled special arrangements to be implemented at these delivery sites to facilitate accessibility for the transportation and hoisting of the equipment.
The transit of the 4 pieces on time and the successful completion of the operations thus demonstrate the expertise of the Bolloré Logistics network in terms of rail equipment logistics, making it a vital partner for the TER project in Senegal.
The customer, EIFFAGE Rails France, was moreover very happy with the high-quality services from Bolloré Logistics.
