655-Ton Seismic Vessel Successfully Handled at Destination of Saudi Arabia

June 17th, 2016

In April 2016, Bolloré Logistics China completed the sea shipment of a seismic vessel for a leading worldwide geophysical service company (one of the world's leading geophysical service companies, delivering a wide range of technologies, services and equipment to the oil and gas industry worldwide. They are engaged in seismic data acquisition, processing, interpretation, reservoir geophysics, borehole seismic, micro seismic, GME and multi-client surveys, equipment manufacturing and software R&D), from Xingang (China) to Jeddah (Saudi Arabia). This marks a record-breaking shipment for Mainland China in terms of handling such single piece weight and size cargo.

This shipment of 5,500 cbm single piece was made successful thanks to the effort of our specialized Oil & Gas experts in China, along with the strong support from Bolloré Logistics’ Asia Pacific regional office. The well-prepared technical works with stringent requirements in advance contributed to the very smooth handling of operations.

The boat, weighing 655 tons with a length of 48.9 m, was loaded using two main ship cranes of 400 Mt each. The tandem lifting operation was successfully executed by our appointed carrier at both ends. In order to ensure that the boat was loaded and passed through the space in between two cranes, a detailed simulation lifting plan was carried out prior to loading operations.

However, the Center of Gravity (C.O.G) of the boat was not the same as initially provided. Furthermore, strong winds were encountered during the operations. Thanks to the experienced captain, cargo superintendent, and the crew for their experiences, the teams managed to overcome this challenge and loaded the cargo safely.

Another important step was the lashing and securing. The original plan was to secure with lashing wire, yet, it was decided to use additional big H-type stoppers in order to increase the level of security.

In the end, it was a successful operation with no mishaps to the customer’s great satisfaction.
