Bolloré Logistics Awarded Logistics Contract for Africa’s Largest Wind Power Plant

June 3rd, 2016

In August 2015, Bolloré Logistics in Africa was awarded a contract to provide project logistics services for the Lake Turkana Wind Power Plant by Vestas Wind Systems, one of the main contractors for the project.

The project, which involves installation of 365 wind turbines supplied by Vestas Wind Systems, will supply an additional 310MW of power to Kenya’s national supply grid. This is the largest single private investment in Kenya’s history (€600 million). Once complete, the Lake Turkana Wind Farm is set to become Africa’s largest Wind power plant.

As the logistics provider for the project, the scope of Bolloré Logistics is to ensure customs and regulatory compliance, handling and transport this extra-ordinary cargo from the port of Mombasa to the project site, located in a remote area in Loyangalani District, Marsabit West County, and a distance of 1,220 km.

“As a company that is strongly committed to the development of Kenya and the continent, Bolloré Logistics in Africa is proud to partner with Vestas Wind Systems and the Lake Turkana Project team on this landmark project that is set to positively impact the country’s economic and social structure.” says Mr. Jason Reynard, Bolloré Africa Logistics CEO for East Africa.

Due to the scale of the project, Bolloré Logistics has invested in additional specialized equipment to handle the shipments which are massive in size and weight.

The first shipment has been discharged with success, and land transport operations are now ramping up to reach cruise speed. It is a real challenge for Bolloré Logistics because of a very tight schedule as well as operational constraints due to the remote location of the site. In total, one Wind Turbine Generators per day has to be delivered in one year.

By the end of the project, Bolloré Logistics will move 161,000 freight tons of cargo in 1,376 truckloads, of which 730 are out of gauge.

The operations for the construction of the wind farm of Lake Turkana in Kenya have reached their cruising speed in current 2016 Q2.

This project which is expected to generate about 18% of Kenya's electricity power is presented through the movie produced by the LTWP consortium, with the interview of Michael De Abreu, Project Manager at Bolloré Logistics Kenya.
